SPC Reid Stanley and his wife Elicia are facing some devastating circumstances. While being stationed in Afganistan and Germany, they got the news that Elicia has cancer in her brain, breasts and lungs. They are in the process of relocating to the states where Elicia will enter Hospice. As you can see by the picture, Reid and Elicia have three beautiful children. Needless to say this has wiped them out not only emotionall but financially.
Here's how we all can help. Third Wave Dave is sponsoring an auction on ebay. LTC Buzz Patterson has donated a 3-book set to go to the highest bidder...afterwhich he will inscribe a personal message to the winner. All proceeds go directly to the Stanleys.
or if you simply want to make a donation...which is what I did...go here.
My heart and prayers go out to Reid and Elicia and those three gorgeous children. God be with them.
Lisa

I was being touched by your appeal..until I clicked on this 3RDWave Blog thing..Looks like even this poor family's tragic circumstance is not so tragic as to be above being used as a chance to humiliate Kerry..(But in fairness there is humor directed at Cheney too, which is also inappropriate)..(But am I missing something?)
I am probably already well on my way to being slammed for questioning what I believe is the lack of the appropriateness of these cartoons...so what the h***, I might as well state what is on my mind about this subject....
My comment: If these folks were citizens of Canada, England, or Sweden, this desperate appeal for money wouldn't be necessary in the first place.
Nor, If the Democratic plan for Health Care reform proposed under the Clinton Administration, not been trashed by the 'Righties', again maybe these people wouldn't be in such desperate circumstances.....
Again, I am an just an aging black Liberal who is so far out of touch..that I am probably missing the logic of what seems sooo hypocritical, (and tragically sad), to me...

I agree with everything you said Lee. If you want help from all America, then it is best not to insult the liberal half.

You two are idiots...the humor is directed at everyone... did you not see Bush's photo in there as well?
Geeze.... lighten up... everyone was in there from both sides of the street......
Can we not laugh at anything these days???

Lisa I went to bid on the books and found them something I could support with a bid. If that makes me an idiot so be it. While the right might think it is funny to call us liberals traitors, it does not help you to raise money from us.
Lisa when was the last time you gave money to someone while they were spitting into your eyes?
Lee has a great point about health insurance: "If these folks were citizens of Canada, England, or Sweden, this desperate appeal for money wouldn't be necessary in the first place."
Again if all this makes me an idiot so be it.

You're right HC... they wouldn't have to pay for it... they would just have to be put on an 8 month waiting list for any available treatment giving her a certain death sentence.... unfortunately, in this particular case, the treatment they sought didn't work and there is no hope.
But I'm so glad that both you and Lee found some way to make a political issue out of this family's tragedy.
Posted by: Lisa | Thursday, October 26, 2006 at 09:15 AM
Lisa,(in a futile attempt at rebuttal of my claim that The family would have had medical coverage in other countries), says:
"...You're right HC... they wouldn't have to pay for it..."
Well Lisa, that is obviously untrue, the 'payment for health care',(premiums which, if you understood insurance mathematics, instead of earning your MBA degree from The Limbaugh School of NeoCon Hatred'), would have been 'paid' previously by everybody in the country who pays taxes.
She further convolutes her erroneous position:
"...... they would just have to be put on an 8 month waiting list for any available treatment giving her a certain death sentence...."
She repeats the 'jaded Rightie' mantra above...which is a complete distortion of reality.
---
I have interviewed dozens of citizens from several of these countries. To a person, 100% of those that I have spoken to, say that is NOT TRUE! You may have to wait a little while for 'Elective procedures'. Like getting that ugly fat sucked out of your fat ass, or pulling those facial wrinkles away, but 'Emergency' or 'necessary' or 'Critical' procedures are handled right away...In fact, way faster than here in the U.S. where hospitals are closing, or there are onerous long waits for painful hours on end, due to under staffing problems, or insufficient facilities in city or county hospitals , or drowning in red-tape paperwork that is withering.
Then Lisa makes the ultimate 'oxymoronic' statement:
"...8 month waiting list for any available treatment giving her a certain death sentence.... unfortunately, in this particular case, the treatment they sought didn't,(sic: should be 'doesn't work' as they apparently can't afford to try it? Which makes the result a 'hypothetical?) and there is no hope..."
Well...Lisa...If the treatment 'doesn't work', (and by inference the patient is already doomed)..then that makes the issue of the 'wait time' academic doesn't it?
Lastly:
"...But I'm so glad that both you (HC),and Lee found some way to make a political issue out of this family's tragedy..."
I guess The Righties didn't turn the 'Terry Schiavo' tragic cade into a political sideshow...right?
and,
'2 Babes' IS a political BLOG, right?
and,
Your entire Thread. including Subject, context, and conclusion, is cast inside a 'political context',i.e, 'MillBlogger in Need'; plus references to, and support for, strident Rightie political BLOGS, i.e, 3RD Wave; Michelle Malkin, etc.
Lisa...aren't you above being a 'whiny', Rightie, Ditto-Head?

Why Lee... I thought I was a... wait..how did it go... "neurtic bitch" or something along those lines.
Make up your mind babe... which am I?
So many roles to play... so little time.

I am sorry, but the sites you linked "found some way to make a political issue out of this family's tragedy." I just refuse to be peed on and only believe that is raining.
Lee is also right Medical Care in other countries. I know be

because I was treated for chest pains in Europe right away.
BTW Here in the US how long does it take you to get an appointment with a specialist?
Posted by: | Thursday, October 26, 2006 at 12:43 PM
Now..Now Lisa...The 'neurotic Bitch' characterization was a 'tongue-in-cheek', 'broad-brushed' description of of 'carpy' women who past the age of 50, (of which you are about 20 years or so away from being, I guess?), are affected by the disruption to their hormonal balance because of estrogen depletion and maybe even holes in the ozone layer, I don't know, but they get needlessly shrill at everything a guy does who just wants to kick back and watch a football game, and enjoy a 'cold one' after a week of getting his teeth kicked in at work trying to earn a cushy living for his soul-mate....
I never claimed that you, specifically were that woman.
----
Now, you do have your moments, but you are a wonderful person, and the world, and particularly, fans of '2 babes' are very lucky to endure..er..be associated with you...

Ah yes, the wonders of state-paid medicine.

"One of the most decorated British fighter pilots of the Second World War has sold his medals, diaries and other memorabilia partly to pay for a hip replacement operation for his wife who faced at least a six-month wait on the National Health Service.
Sqn Ldr Neville Duke, 83, the Royal Air Force's top-scoring ace in the Mediterranean theatre who set a world air speed record of 728 mph in 1953, put the collection up for auction rather than subject his wife Gwen to months of pain and discomfort while she waited for an operation.
The standard waiting time for hip replacements in the orthopaedic department at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, one of the nearest facilities to the Dukes' home, is six months.
Mrs Duke, who has been in pain with her hip for eight months, was told by her chiropractor that the wait might be 15 months."
One of the basic principles of economics is that if you make something "free" sooner or later you will have to ration it.
Posted by: Pat Curley | Thursday, October 26, 2006 at 05:06 PM
Pat we already ration health care in the USA by denying it to those who cannot afford it.
Yes waiting for elective surgery is a pain, but beats never getting it.
But as long as you have yours why care about those without.
Posted by: | Thursday, October 26, 2006 at 06:13 PM
The British Health service may not be perfect, but all are treated equally.
If Mrs Duke was in the US she would still have had to pay, and a damn sight more than in the UK.
As for Mrs Stanley she would have been seen by a Consultant within two weeks of referral and would also have benefited from free cervical and breast screening.
The thousands of people who are treated quickly and successfully are not news, so it's always bad press for the NHS
There is an old North of England saying.
"Better owt than nowt"
Better something than nothing!

Excuse me, but don't military families have health insurance provided by the government?
Posted by: Miriam | Friday, October 27, 2006 at 01:29 PM
Her hospital bills are covered, but home hospice care isn't.
Posted by: Pat Curley | Friday, October 27, 2006 at 03:50 PM
I think it varies by state as well. When my wife was sick during her pregnancy, the state of NY sent home hospice care to us a couple times a week? And all she had was gestational diabetese. I was an E-5 in the Army at the time living in on base houseing as well.
