Apparently, Joe Biden said that a lot of Indians own 7-11's. Ummm...OK...so what? Here, in Rhode Island, a lot of Syrians own the mini-marts. Is that some how offensive?
If this is the biggest faux pas Biden makes then everyone who hopes to see him be President will be extremely happy. I can almost guarantee that by the end of the campaign this will not even make the top 1,000 stupid things Biden has said. Those of us who like him, grin and bear his "foot-in-mouth" disease.
I sure as hell hope he doesn't apologize for this.
Conservatives making a big deal about this while saying they aren't making a big deal about this: Michelle Malkin, Rhymes with Right, Iowa Voice and Ed Driscoll
and I swear ABP mentioned it just to see if it could get a rise out of me :O)
Riddle me this, batmen. If no one thinks Biden has a shot, how come everyone takes every opportunity to slap him around?

"Riddle me this, batmen. If no one thinks Biden has a shot, how come everyone takes every opportunity to slap him around?"
Simple.
First of all, he shoots his mouth off at the opposition more than most of the blowhards in the Democrat party - he was desceibed on CNN during the Alito confirmations as one of the Senate's "windiest" voices. This leaves him open to criticism for that seemingly endless stream of public comments and gaffes.
Second, tell me what you think the media reaction would be if you replaced "Joe Biden (D)" with, say, "Rick Santorum (R)." That's the main reason for the pile on - Trent Lott (R), for example, was nearly skinned alive for comments equally as stupid.
Third - its fun to slap Biden around because he's Joe Freikin' Biden.

Chris: "Riddle me this, batmen. If no one thinks Biden has a shot, how come everyone takes every opportunity to slap him around?"
ME: Because it is just so much fun and he makes it so darn easy to do...

hey--for the reord I thought Lott got a raw deal
Posted by: Chris | Friday, July 07, 2006 at 08:32 AM
No fair! Matt took my answer. =D
I only commented on it to illustrate the media and the left's double standard. If this were a Republican who said it, regardless of whether it was true or not, there would have been a huge outcry about it.

Because it is fun to do so. He kind of invites the abuse anyway.

Mr. Biden has already been all over CNN defending his stupid remark -- he claims they didn't tell all he said, he said he is proud the middle class Indians are running the stores., ect. No Joe, you were making a slur but its OK cuz you a dem and thats O.K. I get so sick of the double standard.

i want to know how stating a fact is a slur. See michelle malkin for the accuracy of the quote and while i think Lott got a raw deal saying indians own 7/11's is a little different than saying the country would be better off if we had elected a segregtionist...
Posted by: Chris | Friday, July 07, 2006 at 06:19 PM
Actually, what Biden said is not a fact. He never said a lot of Indian Americans own 7.11's and Dunkin Donuts. He said you couldn't go in one without having an Indian accent. It's not the worst thing I've ever heard, but it's still stupid and ignorant.

Biden's comment was in poor taste, but did he mean as a racial slur? I doubt it.
Does his comment hurt his chances for President? Sure does.
Is it fair that all the good work that Joe as done for this country is overshadowed by his Dumb Remarks? No
But swiftboating is a fact of life.

There's plenty of other reasons to take Biden to task. He's always considered a Presidential candidate, right until he opens his yapper in extemporaneous situations. The guy has foot-in-mouth disease, even though this time it wasn't particularly egregious.
However, it does make for some funny caption contests...

I agree with you lawhawk -- Biden often swallows his foot with comments and I have to hear one more time "I told President Bush this or that" , get real Joe he ain't gonna listen to you.

Ah, I see, every negative press story on a Dem is now called "swiftboating" now... Not a very good strat there HC as most of the public believed the swift boat veterans and not John Kerry (as well they should have)...

If putting your foot in your mouth precluded you from being President, George Bush would be a rancher...

Chris, consider this. We were once told that perception is reality to the holder of that perception. I tend to take things at face value, and I really don't think Biden meant to insult anyone. But other people's perceptions of him will be colored by this action. And that may hurt, or at best, will do him no long term political damage. Me, I really don't care - - he is a politician. I sort of expect such nonsense from them. In fact, I am surprised that we don't see more of it.
Carlos Mencia says shit that is far more outlandish, and people eat his stuff up as being riotously funny. Wonder why that is?
