We got a tip. As Lisa and I are in no position to verify anything that comes out of the Joint Chiefs of Staff's office please view the following with that appropriate caveat. OK on with it.
On January 29th this cartoon appeared in the Washington Post.
Apparently, the Joint Chiefs took exception to it and sent the following letter to the Washington Post. I say apparently because again, Lisa and I aren't in a position to verify what the Joint Chiefs are doing...but here it is:

Rumor has it the Washington Post is thinking of responding tomorrow...
Ok I can't figure out how to get the scanned image to show up--so feel free to download it and make the first comments. I have to take my daughter to dance. Also, feel free to let me know how to upload a PDF file as an an image or something...
UPDATE AGAIN: CHECK OUT THE CHARGES OF PLAGARISM THAT ARE BEING LEVELED AT TIM TOLES
UPDATE AGAIN: Here is the Washington Post's response. They also printed the Joint Chief's letter in full.
UPDATE: Welcome to those here from Michelle Malkin's site. The letter and the cartoon are on a post above. Take a look around. One of tonight's postings is from Fox News Military Analyst Colonel David Hunt.
You can read more by Colonel Hunt here.

This cartoonist, Tom Tolles was brought on to replace Herblock who was one of the great liberal cartoonist for many years at the Post. This guy can't hold a candle to Herblock and this is one more tasteless example among many.

I knew Ted Rall. And Tom Tolles is no Ted Rall.
Ok --- so he's close. If either of them were standing next to me and their hair was on fire...I'd piss on their legs.

I think the key word here is civilized. The Arab culture stop progressing somewhere around the 12th century.

Are any of you really surprised that they would run something like that?
I'm not. It is an anti-administration, anti-conservative, anti-republican, and anti-military rag. Frankly I wouldn't expect anything better from them. Their declining subscriptions are apparently not telling them anything about their crap.

Tolles is a one-note Charlie (apologies to anyone reading this named Charles); this isn't the first of his editorial cartoons that has appalled me (although it belongs in his top ten list of tasteless) and unfortunately, it won't be his last.
I *REALLY* miss Herblock. His cartoons had a lot more whit, dealt with many more subjects, and he drew better.

The Washington Post flushing itself down the sewer with another tasteless idiot. What's new?
Posted by: syn | Wednesday, February 01, 2006 at 05:08 PM
I sent a letter to Letters@washpost.com complaining of their sick humor and let them know that I will never ever again purchase or read anything they publish. I further sent e-mails to all my friends calling their attn. to this desgraceful disparagement of our military and suggested they also voice their dissent . In my opinion the best way to get the attention of Liberal nit wits is to hit them in the pocket book. You can't talk logic to them, because they refuse to allow the conversation to ever approach the point of going to war in order to perserve our freedoms. Better,"in their mind" to surrender and adapt. Thats the policy of the pants pissing gutless cowards.

Yeah, I always thought amputees were a laff riot. Didn't know The WaPo folks were into that kind of stuff, though.
I can't wait for the Tole's bit on burn victims and rape. Haw!

I continue to believe that liberals disdain the US Military because the men and women who defend our Nation are a daily reminder of what liberals are not, and will never be. I also believe that liberals loathe the US Military because, in their liberal minds, the men and women who defend our Nation steal the spotlight from what THEY consider important in the world (healing mother earth, scientology, ending AIDS, karbala, etc.)
Whenever I picture liberals devising their plans to throw excrement at the men and women of the US Military, I always think of that fable by Aesop, "The Fox and the Grapes," which describes this psychological deformity so well -
after numerous attempts to reach for a bunch of delicious grapes on high, a beaten fox saunters away grumbling, "I didn't want those grapes anyway...they were probably sour."
Tom Tolles is the fox...and the courage/character/sense of purpose which our brave military owns are the grapes.

I thought you would like to see the text of the e-mail I sent the Post...
Dear Editors
First I have to say that I don't subscribe to your paper, but I have been reading assorted articles from you online for a while now...no longer.
After seeing the disgusting Tom Tolles cartoon with the serviceman amputee, I can not in good consience read ANYTHING from a paper that feels this is in good taste. I may miss something that is available only from your publication (unlikely), but this will be a small price to pay to avoid the gag reflex I find myself experiencing at the mere mention of the name "Washington Post"..oops...almost spewed.
Yours in true disgust,
Casey Brown

As the father of three sons who joined the Marines Reserve, and an only son-in-law who is a 20 year veteran of the Army, this really is the bottom of the pits.
Cartoons, whether political or otherwise, are supposed to be humorous. And well drawn.
This is neither. Ditto for Doonesbury.

I am sure the Washington Post will reply in a very tasteless manner since they are willing to print such a vulgar cartoon.
When you scan the document save it as gif or jpg etc.

The cartoon is posted at www.michellemalkin.com.
I'm not aware that editorial cartoons are supposed to be 'humorous'. many are. This one is not. But it is powerful and in my opinion, right on the mark.
Instead of getting your knickers in a knot over a cartoon how about some criticism for a Sec. of Defense who sent troops into harms way with a lousy plan, lousy equipment and in too few numbers on an impossible mission?
Just wondering.

despite the arthur stone's of the world's best efforts, little bits and pieces of truth filter back to us here in the US. and all Christiana Amanpour's [and her new best pal peter arnett] attempts to pull a modern day Cronkite will no longer work. in the age of information, arthur stone isn't able to win the debate, he's just annoying and ill-informed. and, judging by his lack of compassion for a wounded American, he's a bit heartless.

I think it's bizarre that some think this is an attack on service men and women. It is obviously a satirical observation of the peril and abuse they've been exposed to by a dithering bullshit artist. I think people who were against the war would be a lot more happy if you hypocrites would just come out and admit you were and are behind this administration because you believe the muslims are pagans and Jesus Christ must have his due. And stop hiding behind "freedoms" when you shit yourself and get the censor march going every time someone you don't agree with tries to use them.
I love rants like this from syn who says one can't "talk" logic to liberals because "Thats the policy of the pants pissing gutless cowards."You come across as a real articulate and engaging chick.
Maybe it's not your rationale it's your foul scat infested breath.

I'm wondering why if doves like Arthur believe that there were too few troops sent to Iraq, why are they saying the troops should come home?
Here's the story Arthur: the picture isn't just tasteless, it's fundamentally untrue. The American military has not been rendered crippled and impotent by Iraq. Stretched? Yes. But Donald Rumsfeld and the establishment are not trying to make something powerless into something powerful. If you want examples of what that really looks like, I refer you to the Paris Commune, the Trotskyist/Anarchist alliance against Franco, or the Nazis in the last defense of Berlin.
So if this cartoon is "right on the mark" to you, that shows your lack of intellectual and moral seriousness.
As to your "point" that American troops went into Iraq with a lousy pland and lousy equipment: welcome to the world, kiddo. That exact same charge could be (and has been) levelled at the brass in every single invasion since Sun-Tzu.
Posted by: BadLiberal | Wednesday, February 01, 2006 at 08:12 PM
Imagine a cartoon depicting an Iraqi being fed into a shredder in front of a huge pile of unknown debris and a figure labeled "U.S. Democrats and Liberals and the U.N." saying, "We are deeply concerned about your mistreatment, but immediate and effective action would be a violation of international law. Rest assured your suffering will be remembered and we will not rest until the entire world knows of your plight."
Powerful and 100% factual, but would Arthur Stone like that?
Just wondering.
Well, no. I know exactly how he and his fellow anti-Americans would react. Shrieking bloody murder about lies and a responsible press.
"Instead of getting your knickers in a knot over a cartoon how about some criticism for a Sec. of Defense who sent troops into harms way with a lousy plan, lousy equipment and in too few numbers on an impossible mission?"
Instead of mouthing fantasies you are desperately trying to convince yourself of, why not try facing reality? Democrats just might start winning elections.

Me thinks Arthur is a Arm Chair General from the ranks of the KOs.
But he's way off track spouting all the lib lies. I wonder if he bothered to trackback and read the letter of protest signed by all the Generals sent to the WaPo as regards the cartoon.Looking back to the days of WWII (i was there) the loss of life would have really put old arthur's knickers in a knot. Thinking back had we had the kook crowd of today, they couldn't have handled it. Luckily we didn't have any John Kerry's; Dick Durbins; Murtha; all we had was Tokyo Rose and she was recognized for what she was,"the enemy". And went to prison after the war I might add. As I see it that might still be a good policy. If you are giving aid & comfort to the enemy, why should we show you any respect whatsoever. Have you ever done one damn thing to show your respect for our troops and their effort to keep this country free? Probably not. Too dam busy as a arm chair general.

Question;
Why is it liberals never listen to the actual troops on the ground.
Liberals, "Iraq's a bloodbath!!"
What the troops are saying, "Iraq isn't a bloodbath, and we're making progress."
Liberals, "Iraq's a bloodbath, we've lost!!"
Liberals, "They need more protective armor!"
What the troops are actually saying, "We don't want anymore, we'd like to be able to move."
Liberals, "Iraq's a bloodbath, our troops need more armor, send more armor!"
And the Libs just lap Cindy up like a thirsty dog. Though I'll say, I'd stay far away from that nut case.
Or the famous Code Pink in front of Walter Reed. I'm sure those soldiers just LOVE hearing all the anti war slogans like "Enlist here to die for Haliburton". Yet the wounded soldiers there routinely vent their disgust, Code Pink still carries on without saying or paying any attention.

Chris S.:
Because they do not want to hear.
Of course they are also the ones that say they support the troops. The Jihadi "troops" that is.
Unfortunately for them the time is coming soon where their support for the Islamofacists will end up biting them in the ass.

Instead of cancelling subscriptions to WaPo, or whatever, instead go to the JCS home page and write them a thank you note for writing the letter.
I am retired military, and too often the Generals kept silet until they retired. The current JCS seem to have stepped up to common sense defense while still staying neutral in the political world.
