Our Neighbors to the North Have Seen the Light
Yesterday, after twelve years of liberal leadership... our Canadian friends voted in a conservative minority government.
Looks like January 24 isn't the most depressing day after all...

Who can fill us in on the Canadian political parties? I am not certain who the bad actors are up there, only that Canada spends a lot of time running us down when they have the chance.
Any Canucks out there?

Canada has four main political parties:
Conservatives - 124 seats
Liberals - 103 seats
New Democrats - 29 seats
Bloc Quebecois (Quebec only) - 51 seats.
The conservatives got around 36% of the popular vote (no "mandate" here, even by bushian math.
The prior liberal government was also a minority goverment, but had natural allegiances to the New Democrats and Bloc Quebecois (all share fundamantal core values) - the incoming conservatives have no natural affinity to any of the opposition plan and will have to gain bipartisan support for any legistlation is proposes, so Michelle's knicker wetting may be a bit premature.
See you in 18 months!

So in Canada, it would seem that short term shifting political alliances to achieve certain objectives would be even more important than with a basic two party system here.
Has any party in Canada ever had a real mandate of more than 50 percent of the population that you know of?

Yes, up until the last two elections the liberals had a majority government for ~ 18 years (popular vote, not more than 50% of the population, don't kid yourself if you think chimp boy got even close to that). That's why their (non-elected) senate is nice and full of liberals and their supreme court is 9 liberals and two "progressive" conservatives (one of whom has to retire soon as they don't let doddering old fucks (sorry, those over 75) make important decisions). Note also that the Canadian "conservative" party is to the left of the US Democratic party and is a lame duck from day 1. See you, as I said, in 18 months!

Oh, minority gubmints in Canada rarely make it past 18 months. This one won't break that habit.
