Mom, Jimmy supports Judge Alito
I haven't written much about Judge Alito and his nomination--mostly because I am sick and tired of this Supreme Court thing. I swear to God listening to politicians argue about The Court is like taking a 23 hour road trip with three kids.
"Mom, Jimmy said there isn't a Constitutional right to privacy..."
"Yeah, well he looked at me funny when I said that privacy and abortion aren't the same thing..."
"Thpppt! You're a judicial activist."
"Yeah, well better than that a conservative wack-job!"
"You're stupid!"
"No, you're stupid!"
"Don't make me pull over."
Blogs For Bush says the Democrats have a litmus test for Supreme Court nominees. They claim that if a nominee doesn't recognize a Constitutional right to an abortion Dems won't vote for him or her. I don't think that is true, but even if it were, I'm not sure that there is anything wrong with that.
Here is why: I think it is the same on the other side. I don't think you would see many Republicans voting for a Supreme Court nominee that said he or she believed there was a Constitutional right to an abortion.
Now don't go throwing the Ginsberg thing at me, that was forever ago. Times have changed. There are maybe 6 Republicans who would find that an acceptable judicial philosophy.
It really isn't about abortion--on either side--except for a handful of nutcases. It is about how they view the Constitution. It is about the approach to interpreting the Constitution. Why would anyone vote for a candidate who they believed would interpret the Constitution incorrectly?
This is one of those wedge issues where everyone calls everyone else disingenuous and it actually isn't true. I couldn't support a candidate who didn't believe the Constitution didn't contain an implied right to privacy no more than a strict constructionist could support a candidate that believed there was--no matter how qualified that person was.
Alito will be confirmed, barring pictures oh him and three goats surfacing, but the people who vote against him can actually be people of principle. It just makes better spin to not admit that.

It's a tad early to say that Alito will be confirmed. I still see a chance for a filibuster. I am not saying it will happen, just there is a chance.

Of course there will be a filibuster. The Democrats aren't about to let this guy get in there. With his appointment, there goes the best chance the Dems have for circumventing the will of the people, and obtaining their goals through judicial activism.

"Alito will be confirmed, barring pictures of him ...but the people who vote against him" - will NOT look like people of principle! It's NOT about how the Constitution is viewed. It IS about abortion and the Constitution is NOT about abortion. (or shouldn't be) (or never was before some judge said it was.) It is so sad but it is NOT about the Constitution. It SHOULD be about the approach to interpreting the Constiution, which has NOTHING to do with the privacy of killing your baby.

Alito will be the final nail in the coffin of the conservative movement. Enjoy!!!

HC, why do you think we are enjoying? No conservatives have been enjoying any of this. The Republicans are letting the Democrats, and the Left, get away murder. The Administration has not fought for itself. For some reason, they think the people will just know. They believe the people are smart. They have to take the Democrat's position and strategy - that the masses are stupid and don't know any better. That is what's wrong with the "Conservative Movement"

Chris Sears is even more cynical than I am, and that is saying something. I do agree with what he is saying though. The average American is a meathead politically. Thus it is small wonder that some of the guys that get elected do get elected.

Chris S.
The reason the Republicans are letting the Democrats get away with Murder is because the Republicans want to get reelected.
They know the republican party has gone to far to the right. You had your time and now it is coming to an end. So Enjoy the time you have left to rule.
