What the Schiavo mess has brought us...
To all who thought it was right for people other than Terri Schiavo's family to intervene in her medical care, read this. In Texas, child welfare officials removed four children from the custody of their parents because they disagreed with the medical decisions the family had made. A court will decide whether the 12 year old will have to undergo radiation despite her wishes as well as the wishes of her parents. The other three children are in foster homes and the parents have been arrested. See what we have wrought?

UPDATE: The parents have dropped their objections to treatment now that tests have shown the girls cancer is no longer in remission. The girl is still in state custody because of concerns that the parents will take her but the three boys have been returned to the home.
I noticed no one commented here. I notice that the support for the state removing the girl from her parents care was non-existent. I don't get it. Where are all the people who wanted Terri Schiavo to be kept alive?
What happens if the radiation doesn't work and the family and the girl decide that she no longer wishes to seek treatment? Will the state force her into it? All you mothers out there--where are you on this?
Chris

Don't forget, Chapter 166 of the Texas Health and Safety code allows hospitals to remove life support from a patient, even or the objection of family members. The original provision was signed into law by Gov. G.W. Bush in 1999, and the law was extentened to apply to minors in 2003 (signing into law by Gov. Rick Perry). Interesting that Bush, who is now adding support to fruitcakes who want to adopt embryos, would have taken such a stance six years ago. Gov. Perry, BTW, was recently quoted as saying the government "cannot NOT legislate morality." I wonder if his audience for that comment was aware of his actions vis a vis terminally ill children.
