So, the argument about whether you should have to show an ID to vote continues, even though the Supreme Court has ruled that states can require it. The other side argues that this disenfranchises poor, elderly and disabled voters. I'm not so sure.
If we agree that voter fraud is a bad thing, and we should. And if we agree that people who are not citizens should not vote, and we should. Why is this bad?
Please no one roll out the poll tax argument--it isn't the same. The laws don't say you have to have a driver's license, they say you have to have a form of id. Some place that is a utility bill with your address on it.
You have to show the same thing to register your kid for Little League.
Maybe the point isn't that some people don't have an id--maybe the point should be that should have an id. The poor and disabled and elderly come in contact with the state more than people who aren't any of those things. All of them are eligible for assistance and probably have to prove who they are more than people who don't.
So, what exactly is the issue here?
I will say that the latest move for voter to prove status will make my life more difficult. I was born on a military base in Belgium and my birth certificate is in French. Somewhere on there it says I was born to American parents on American soil but the odds of someone being able to read French are not good. I could go to get a copy of my Social Security card, which I lost, but they have to be able to read French there too...It's a headache.
However, I lost my Social Security card so it's mostly my fault that I would have to kill a day proving my citizenship.
I just don't see the big deal here folks.

and I wanna play electoral math.
I've been messing with this map for hours. It's Mother's Day and I'm exhausted from this year...
I think Obama could run a totally different kind of General Election Campaign. I think he could ignore the traditional model of focusing on the solid Dems states and battling in only OH and FL. I think he should, based on today's numbers, target a bunch of states no one else thinks he can win.
If McCain doesn't pick a holy roller right-winger for a VP, I think the base of the Republican Party will be hard to motivate. I think they will stay home--particularly if the right tv spots are played in those areas...because McCain didn't have "Come to Jesus moment." He had a "I want to be President" moment. And the far right does not tend to support those kind of moments.
I think Obama will lose NH and RI--I know, no one thinks he'll lose RI, but none of the pundits live here. None of them are listening to the particularly vile spew from the rank and file Dem voters here. Remember he lost by 18 points here. There is a reason for that.
SO, at the risk of being laughed off my own blog--
I think Obama should invest some time and money in:
Iowa, South Carolina, North Carolina, Colorado, Louisiana, Virgina, Mississippi and Arkansas, Michigan, and Minnesota.
I love electoral math which makes me a huge dork but I love it anyway.
So, school is over. Barring weirdness, I will graduate May 25th. You can expect that I will be around a lot more often now.
